Abaran Introduction and History
For five centuries, Abarán belonged to the Encomienda of Ricote, a period characterized by the conditions to which they subjected the Moorish forcing them to abandon their religion and eventual expulsion at the beginning of 17th century.Depopulation occurred in the 15th century as a result of frequent civil wars in the Kingdom of Murcia, oppressive taxes and other ill-treatments, which led them to flee to Granada and the Nazarí stronghold. The 19th century was catastrophic with the earthquake of 1802, crop failure, flooding, epidemic and the war of Independence. They took communal decisions, like the union of waters with Blanca in 1807, the construction of a clock in the bell tower in 1809, and the building in 1834 of a new hermitage. By the middle of that century the village disassociated itself with the Orden de Santiago.
